I am delighted and honored to be named one of three winners in the 2019 Vic Heyman singer-songwriter competition at the South Florida Folk Festival, http://www.southfloridafolkfest.net/SFFF/-S-SCompetition-2019Winners.html . There was a ton of great music there and I made a lot of new friends and had a great time. Competition winners get to play as regular performers the next year and I'm already looking forward to going back to participate in such a wonderful music festival again in 2020.
Gray has a pleasant, clear singing voice that would have fit in perfectly in Greenwich Village folk clubs at the dawn of the ‘60s --Mark Hinson, The Tallahassee Democrat
George Gray, singer-songwriter and storyteller living in Tallahassee FL, has performed at area folk festivals, such as The Will McLean Music Festival in Brooksville FL, Monticello’s Southern Music Rising, the Florida Folk Festival in White Springs and the South Florida Folk Festival where he was a winner of the Vic Heyman singer-songwriter contest. He is also a favorite at local listening rooms and house concerts. He sings original tunes that are sometimes thought provoking and often humorous. His subjects range from obscure historical events like I Choose Music, (about Karim Wasfi re-adapting to life in Baghdad) to humorous, Why Buy the Cow, (about a boy reflecting on what this phrase means to him at different times in his life) to serious, Pane of Glass, (about visiting a loved one in jail.)
A lover of nature and the outdoors, some of his songs reflect his concern for the natural beauty of Florida's springs, rivers, and wetlands. His ballad to the Apalachicola River, Apalach, won recognition at the 2016 Will McLean Music Festival. He accompanies himself using a unique finger-picking method on guitar, which suits his contemporary folk style very well.
Several years ago, he woke up from a dream with a complete new song in his head and decided he could probably do that awake as well. He’s been writing and sharing his own songs ever since.
